Advisory in Green Hydrogen, Renewable Energy, Carbon Markets & Energy Efficiency

With the launch of the Kenya Green Hydrogen Strategy & Roadmap, together with the Guideline for the development of Green Hydrogen/Derivatives in Kenya, the country has attracted a lot of interest from all over the world on the topic of Hydrogen. Our client identified that Kenya has an opportunity to develop decarbonisation solutions along the eastern shipping corridor that is still untapped. In this project, green hydrogen will be produced along the coastline of Kenya to be used for ammonia ships docking at the ports of Mombasa and Lamu.

In trying to take advantage of the abundant renewable energy resources in Northern Kenya, our client sought to explore the opportunity that lies with production of green hydrogen at the lowest cost possible. The pre-feasibility explored the different scenarios of harnessing Solar & Wind to produce green hydrogen that could be processed further to make Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for international airlines plying the Nairobi route.

Kenya has been making significant strides in developing its Carbon market. In 2024, Kenya published the Climate Change (Carbon Markets) Regulations which provided a legal framework for carbon projects and markets.

With the approval of EPRA as the local issuer  of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-REC(E)) in Kenya. This is a significant development, as it grants EPRA the authority to verify that electricity is generated from renewable sources. Zuech is developing a data driven platform to facilitate the cerification and trading of these certificates.

The last couple of years has seen the rise of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) in Kenya, especially in the 2-wheeler and 4-wheeler segments for the short and medium haul. WIth the gap in long-haul transit segment, we are supporting our client to develop a solution for long distance trucks that could be fueled by Hydrogen for longer distances contributing to a more comprehensible decarbonisation of the Transport industry and complement Battery Electric Vehicles.
